US Considers Dropping Charges Against Julian Assange
The United States is contemplating dropping charges against Julian Assange, as confirmed by President Joe Biden, who stated that he is considering the request
Julian Assange, the founder of the whistleblower website WikiLeaks.org, has hinted at new leaks.
Speaking via Skype from Ecuador's Embassy in London, he did not specify the types of documents or when they would be published, according to reports of The Guardian.
Assange, as cited by Bloomberg News, noted that he would keep silent about the timing or contents of the data because he did not want to give the subjects a chance to prepare a response.
He spoke to over 3000 participants in the South By Southwest Interactive Festival in Austin, Texas, commenting on topics such as journalism, US surveillance programs and the situation in Ukraine.
Assange has been living in the Ecuadorian embassy in London since June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over a sexual assault charge, which he has denied. Assange has argued that the arrest would pave the way for his extradition to the United States to face charges over leaking hundreds of thousands of classified documents.
On Monday, Edward Snowden will also speak to the participants in the conference via video link. Snowden, a former CIA employee and former National Security Agency contractor, was granted temporary asylum in Russia after uncovering the mass electronic surveillance program of the NSA. He faces felony charges of espionage and theft of government property in the US.
