Bulgarian anti-government protesters are to stage a fresh rally at the Independence square in Sofia on Saturday.
The protest will coincide with the 24th anniversary of a historical pro-democracy rally that saw hundreds of thousands of Bulgarians march against the notorious Article 1 of the totalitarian constitution back in 1989.
Saturday’s rally is to be spearheaded by the “Early-Rising Students” – a non-partisan movement that was collectively bestowed with one of the Human of the Year awards of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee (a human rights NGO) last week.
“Let us go to Independence square and celebrate our award together,” the Early-Rising Students said on Facebook ahead of the protest that is scheduled for 6 pm EET on Saturday.
Protesters against the Socialist-led cabinet first walked out, June 14, after the appointment of controversial media mogul Delyan Peevski for head of Bulgaria's State Agency for National Security. The rallies attracted dozens of thousands of anti-corruption protesters for a number of days.
Peevski's reinstatement as MP after his resignation from the Security Agency provoked a student occupation at Sofia University in October.
Rallies, though smaller in numbers, are still held every evening in downtown Sofia.
