Bulgaria’s liberal Movement for Rights and Freedoms party has criticized the Parliament’s controversial decision to extend a moratoriums on the sale of farm land to foreigners.

Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Lyutvi Mestan has stated that the decision is unconstitutional, adding that the party may approach the Constitutional Court on the issue.

The move would not defend the interests of Bulgaria’s citizens, but rather violate them, Mestan pointed out.

He reminded that the decision is incompatible with Bulgaria’s EU accession treaty.

The Movement for Rights and Freedoms was the only party that opposed the proposal of populist anti-EU outfit Ataka to extend the existing moratorium on the sale of agriculture land to foreigners.

On Friday, the Bulgarian Parliament decided to extend the ban to January 1, 2020.

The European Commission has already warned Bulgaria with retributive action if the country fails to lift the ban on sale of agricultural land to foreigners starting 2014.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski said extending the moratorium would be unpractical and breach agreements with the EU.
