Bulgaria's Ex-Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov arrived at the Sofia City Court on Thursday morning with two lawyers, ahead of the high-profile trial against him.

Tsvetanov is indicted for "obstruction of justice", by failing to issue prosecutor's requests to grant a permit for the use of special surveillance devices during an investigation against the former head of Veliko Tarnovo's regional anti-mafia unit.

Tsvetanov was accompanied by German lawyer Hans-Peter Uhl and defending attorney Menko Menkov, reports the daily 24 Chasa.

Upon entering the courthouse, the ex-Minister said that he believes in Bulgaria's justice system.

Uhl, who is also an MP from the German Bundestag, stated that he intends to write a report to the European Commission n Bulgaria's judicial system, as a result of his work on the case. He shared his surprise that the trial begins only now, as the charges are for alleged crimes in 2009.

The prosecutors of the case, Kaloyan Angelov and Stefan Rachev, also appeared in the courtroom.
