Bulgaria: 2 Major Parties Tied as 76% of Bulgarians Call for Snap Vote – Poll 23 years after the fall of Communism, Bulgarian voters remain divided and bitter about the country's political parties. File photo

A total of 76% of Bulgarians are in favor of early elections amid the country’s political turmoil, a poll has revealed.

A mere 23% believe the Socialist-led government of PM Plamen Oresharski should remain in office for a full term, according to the poll conducted by Alpha Research.

37% of responders demand early elections within the next few months, while 39% would like the vote to take place in May 2014, when European Parliament elections are also scheduled.

The poll has shown that the two major political outfits in the country – the Bulgarian Socialist Party and the center-right GERB of former PM Boyko Borisov are almost completely tied.

The poll support for the ruling Socialists is 17.9%, while GERB stands at 17.1%.

The Reformist Bloc, an informal coalition of mostly right-wing opposition parties formed during the ongoing anti-government protests in the country, is third with 7.0%.

One more party – the predominantly ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms – would overcome the 4% election threshold. BSP’s main coalition partner stands at 6.1%, according to Alpha Research.

The support for the third party that supports the government – the ultranationalist Ataka – has slumped to 1.6%.

Wednesday marks the 111th consecutive day of relentless anti-government rallies in Bulgaria.

The demonstrations were prompted by the scandalous appointment of media mogul Delyan Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS) on June 14.

Although the appointment was revoked, the people went on to demand that the Socialist-endorsed cabinet resign collectively.

The rallies were fueled by a number of other controversial appointments and by wider concerns about corruption.
