New Macedonian Opposition Leader Wants More Dialogue with Bulgaria

Macedonia's opposition Social Democratic Union new leader Zoran Zaev has expressed his desire to see a more open attitude of its country towards neighboring Bulgaria.

"Skopje must show more diplomatic wisdom and tactfulness in solving issues with its neighbors," said Zaev in an interview for the Bulgarian National Radio Saturday.

Zaev assumed the leadership of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) in May from Branko Crvenkovski.

He expressed criticism for the cabinet of Macedonian PM Nikola Gruevski for not doing enough to better relations between his country and Bulgaria and Greece.

"History is what can unite us rather than divide us. We must look into the future together," stated Zaev.

Bulgaria and Greece have frequently taken issue with Macedonia's interpretation of diverse historical and cultural matters.

"The Friendship Treaty between Bulgaria and Macedonia must be signed as soon as possible," stated Zaev.

The two countries have been working for months on this pact at the insistence of the Bulgarian side.

Last Sunday Macedonian PM Nikola Gruevski visited Bulgaria and held a working meeting in Kyustendil with Bulgarian PM Plamen Oresharski to make a further step in negotiations.
