Bulgaria’s former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has once again stated that early elections would be the only way to calm the ongoing mass anti-government protests in the country.

“I cannot understand why the government does not understand that,” Borisov said during a meeting with representatives of the two largest trade unions in Bulgaria.

Commenting on the Socialist-led government’s determination to remain in power, the former PM said the rulers were trying to delay the early elections so that they could “steal” as much as possible from the planned loan in the amount of BGN 1 B.

Tuesday marks the 46th straight day of mass anti-graft protests against the Bulgarian government. Protesters have demanded that the government resign over a string of controversial appointments and wider concerns about corruption.

Borisov and his center-right government stepped down amid mass protests back in February.
