Inside Bulgaria's Easter Celebrations: Traditions Passed Through Generations
Today marks the joyous celebration of Easter, one of the most significant holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
Bulgaria’s former European Commissioner has warned the country is in for stormy and austere times.
“We are heading into a very difficult period because the criminal electoral system is still in place. It is obvious that only those who have lots of money can play a role in Bulgaria’s politics. Economic interests are the factor, which puts a party in power,” Meglena Kuneva said in an interview for Bulgaria On Air TV channel.
According to Kuneva, who leads the right-wing Bulgaria for Citizens Movement, it is impossible to forecast the date of early elections.
“It is all a question of tenacity and arrogance – of the protesters and rulers respectively,” she added.
Earlier this month the commissioner warned the country may find itself isolated from European Union's decision-making process due to lack of trust in the current political elite.
A day after the Ambassadors of Germany and France to Bulgaria, Matthias Hoepfner and Philippe Autie, issued a joint statement on the tense situation in the country, stressing that the voice of civil society must be heard and warning that the oligarchic model is incompatible with EU membership, Meglena Kuneva said this is Brussels’ last warning.
“After this statement, we can expect all 27 EU member states to put Bulgaria’s membership in deep freeze and keep it away from EU decision-making process. I sincerely hope Bulgaria won’t let this happen,” Kuneva said while on a visit to the Danube town of Russe.
In her words Bulgaria is running out of time and the unprecedented declaration of the ambassadors of the countries, which drive Europe, is clear a message by their governments.
