German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has expressed his support for blacklisting Hezbollah’s military wing in the EU, officials have said.
"In the light of discussions we have had with our partners following the terrorist attack in Burgas, Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle supports listing at least the military wing of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization in the EU," German Foreign Ministry officials said, according to the Jerusalem Post.
"The German position is based on an increasingly clearer picture of the facts and on the progress achieved by Cypriot authorities in analyzing terrorist activities,"the officials added.
"Minister Westerwelle hopes that the necessary consultations within the EU can be concluded rapidly."
Germany is expected to help the UK., the Netherlands and other EU members in the efforts to blacklist Hezbollah’s military wing.
Blacklisting Hezbollah’s military wing as a terrorist group requires a unanimous vote by the 27 EU Member States.
In early February 2013, Bulgaria's then-Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov declared that the investigation of the July 18, 2012 bus bombing at the airport in Burgas had led to the "well-grounded assumption" that two individuals with links to Hezbollah had been involved in the attack.
The terror attack at the Sarafovo airport in Burgas killed seven, including five Israeli tourists, the Bulgarian bus driver, and the alleged suicide bomber.
