Honey is the top export product of Bulgarian organic farmers, according to Stoilko Apostolov, Chair of the Bioselena Foundation for Organic Farming.
Speaking Tuesday in the Danube city of Ruse, Apostolov made clear that Bulgaria was fourth in Europe by exports of organic honey, adding that the other major export goods included organic rose and lavender oil, raspberries, strawberries, and wheat.
Apostolov, as cited by a correspondent of the BGNES news agency, argued that Bulgaria's national strategy on organic farming, which was being drafted, had to put greater emphasis on the export of end products rather than raw materials.
"Bulgaria currently exports wheat to Germany, where it is processed only to return to the country in the form of flour, which sells at much higher prices," he explained.
He said that Bulgaria had a total of 2800 certified organic producers and the areas used for organic farming had reached nearly 30 000 hectares, double than the year before.
He noted that global turnovers in the sector of organic farming had trebled, reaching USD 59 B in 2010.
Apostolov recommended organic farming as an increasingly profitable business.
He informed that an expo of organic products was scheduled to take place on May 15 in Ruse.
The event organized by the Rusenski Lom Nature Park would include ten tents displaying products like organic wine, honey, chilly peppers, cheese, aronia, buffalo dairy produce, etc.
