Ordinary Bulgarians don't care too much about the ongoing wiretapping scandal in the country, according to GERB party leader and former PM Boyko Borisov.

Sunday, Easter, just a week before May 12 early elections in Bulgaria, Borisov gave a rare interview for Nova TV.

"During my campaign trips, no one has asked me about wiretapping, because no one cares about that. Bulgarians care about real problems," said Borisov.

The former PM said he has full trust in his aide and former Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

"I looked into his very eyes and soul," said Borisov, suggesting that he trusted Tsvetanov did not order any illegal wiretapping of opponents.

However, the GERB leader stressed that if prosecution findings suggesting that the former Interior Minister had committed a crime are true, the latter must quit GERB.

"Tsvetanov is a needed and loved figure in our party. But he is strong while I am strong," said Borisov.

The former Bulgarian PM also stressed that the ongoing scandal allegedly shows that Bulgarian media are not under GERB control.

He asked critical NGOs who argued to the contrary to table excuses for their error.
