Interior Ministry officials tasked with monitoring the early parliamentary elections in Bulgaria may be subject to inspections to establish possible connections with members of local electoral commissions.

Kalin Georgiev, Chief Secretary of the Interior Ministry, announced Wednesday that the measure would be taken at a request of the Central Electoral Commission.

Georgiev, as cited by dnevnik.bg, made clear that the checks would be carried out by Interior Ministry officials.

He specified that the inspections would encompass a total of 35 000 officials of the Interior Ministry.

Georgiev added that a temporary reshuffle of police officers for the upcoming elections was impossible.

Georgiev's statement came at the second sitting of the newly established Election Board at the Council of Ministers.

The Election Board brings together representatives of NGOs which participated as observers in Bulgaria's 2011 presidential elections and aims to assist the caretaker government and Prime Minister with the organization of fair and transparent parliamentary elections.

The Wednesday sitting of the Election Board was attended by representatives of the Justice Ministry, the Foreign Ministry, the Central Electoral Commission, and the Dirеctоratе Gеnеral оf Civil Rеgistratiоn and Administrativе Sеrvicеs (GRAO).
