Survey: GERB Set to Dominate Next Parliament with 80 Deputies, WCC-DB to Lose More Seats
The upcoming composition of the 50th National Assembly projects GERB to secure 80 seats, a slight increase from their current 69
Former Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, leader of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, made his first public appearance in a long time Sunday at the party' national conference in Sofia.
The conference started at 1 pm in Sofia's Arena Armeets new and modern multifunctional facility, opened during Borisov's term.
Nearly 15 000 party members and supporters are attending.
Borisov walked inside in the company of his former Deputy and Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov.
The list of official guest includes the Chairman of the Group of the European People's Party, EPP, in the European Parliament, Joseph Daul; EPP Secretary-General, Antonio Lopez-Isturiz; EPP Vice President and Romanian MEP, Anka Boadju; German Bundestag MP, Hans-Peter Uhl; the international secretary of the Christian Social Union, Susanne Luther, and the former Prime Minister of Turkey, Mesut Y?lmaz.
In his speech at the beginning of the conference, Uhl greeted Borisov and Tsvetanov, telling them they deserved to celebrate on election night.
"You are on the right path. It was difficult to reform the judiciary and home affairs. I believe in GERB's success. The attendance here today is a stark proof. You did not follow countries like Cyprus with a money laundering model, bringing the State to a standstill. You walked on the road of fiscal stability and set an example for many. For this reason, I wish to Bulgaria to continue with this success. Bulgaria needs a strong GERB," said Uhl.
On Saturday, Lopez-Isturiz called on all Bulgarians to vote for GERB in order to preserve the stability of the country.
Borisov and his GERB Cabinet resigned on February 21 amidst unprecedented since 1997 mass protest rallies against poverty, stagnation and political corruption. Snap general elections will be held on May 12, just two months ahead of the regularly scheduled date.
