Two key members of Bulgaria’s ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) party will not run for Parliament in the upcoming elections, local media have learned.
Yunal Lyutvi, who has been a Member of Parliament since 1990, and Emel Etem, who has been in all Parliaments since 1997, have both decided not to run for lawmakers, according to Dnevnik.bg.
The website has also reported that the party’s controversial former leader, Ahmed Dogan, will not be among its MP candidates.
Dogan has allegedly decided to retire, calling upon all DPS members who believe they have done enough as politicians to follow suit.
Dogan, who has been a key player in the country's political life over the past decade, retired as leader of the ethnic Turkish party in January.
