Amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, North Korea has announced it will reopen the Yongbyon reactor to boost its nuclear potential.
The move comes after late Monday the North Korean parliament passed a decision to pursue the development of nuclear weapons.
This is a follow up to a similar decision passed Sunday by the central committee of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea.
According to the official position, reopening the Yongbyon reactor would bolster North Korea's nuclear forces "in quality and quantity".
Tensions on the peninsula have come to a head, after the North performed a nuclear test in February, to see UN sanctions imposed, and joint South Korea - USA military drills performed.
The Yongbyon had been closed in 2007 as part of a disarmament process, but recently leader Kim Jong-un had made it clear his country is no longer willing to sacrifice security for aid.
Yongbyon was a main source for enriched plutonium in North Korea's nuclear program, writes the BBC.
