By abstaining from voting the Members of the Bulgarian Parliament rejected Wednesday the proposal to temporary ban agents and collaborators of the former Communist State Security from holding high-ranking State posts.
The proposal of the right-wing Blue Coalition for a 10-year ban for people from the State Security, DS, and the Communist military intelligence was rejected by 18 against and 67 abstained. Only 12 voted for. The total number of MPs is 240.
The ban would have affected the Supreme Judicial Council, VSS, the Defense Ministry, the Central Bank, BNB, the current intelligence and security services, the Ombudsman institution, the National Electric Company, NEK, the Bulgarian Energy Holding, BEH, and a number of other companies where the State is the majority shareholder.
The vote was held without any debates despite the insistence of the right-wing that there is such ban in most of the former socialist countries.
The MPs also rejected the proposal of the far-right, nationalist Ataka party for eliminating the Value Added Tax, VAT, on basic staples such as bread, fuel, medications and school books. 54 again abstained, 23 were against, and 14 for.
