Bulgarian Ruling Party to Keep Building on Abused Black Sea Coast
The MPs of Bulgarian ruling party GERB will work towards rejecting a legislative proposal banning all construction along a 100-meter wide zone along the country's Black Sea coast.
This is only the latest in a long string of inconsistent GERB moves, as the legislative amendment was proposed by GERB's own Minister of Regional Development Lilyana Pavlova.
GERB MP Lyuben Tatarski said Wednesday that his political group will press for keeping the old regime which allows construction along the coast, albeit under a more restricted regime than elsewhere.
According to Tatarski, the current regime gives a good balance between environmental and aesthetic concerns on the one hand, and economic interests, on the other.
The GERB MP further defended his position, sayinig that "mayors of cities and towns on the Black Sea" had also objected to the proposed total ban on construction in the 100-meter strip.
Lyuben Tatarski was one of the most vocal GERB MPs who defended a controversial amendment to Bulgaria's Forestry Act, intended to greatly liberalize construction and development in forest areas.
The adoption of the act led to massive protests in Bulgaria's capital Sofia, as many citizens believed that the amendments were developed to service private interests and will prove detrimental to the environment.
Tatarski was also present in the so-called "counterprotests" in support of the Forestry Act, in which residents of various mountain municipalities, many of them civil servants or employees of tourist companies, were made to rally under pressure or for small remunerations.
