Bulgaria Loses Billions Annually Due to Delayed Schengen Membership, Warns Economy Minister
Bulgaria stands to lose approximately BGN 1 billion each year due to its continued exclusion from full membership in the Schengen area
Delyan Dobrev, Bulgaria's new Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism should "travel and sunbathe less", Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said on Friday.
He referred to Dobrev's predecessor, Traicho Traikov, who was fired late on Thursday, allegedly because of the awkward situation that took place during the opening of a Bulgarian-Qatary business forum in Doha.
The forum began with a false start without even one Qatari businessman showing up before the anticipating representatives of over 100 Bulgarian companies.
Earlier on Friday, Borisov stated that it had been "extremely stupid" to open the forum in the morning which clashed with the "Arab tradition" and praised the Foreign Ministry for having a brilliant organization.
"I was heading to my meeting with the ruling Emir of Qatar, when I saw Traikov basking in the sun on the beach while Foreign Minister Mladenov was going crazy what to do. How would Arabs come to a forum at 10 am when their big boss is not there?" said the PM.
While presenting Traikov's former Deputy, Delyan Dobrev, as the new Economy Minister, Borisov pointed out that he has gained a lot of experience since he was appointed in May 2011.
"I believe he can cope very well," he said, adding that Dobrev's priorities should be supporting the small and medium-sized business and increasing the economic growth.
