Bulgarian solders have been ordered by the ruling centrist-right GERB to set up tents and carry out preparations for an outside party planned for its MPs, according to an oppositional Bulgarian Socialist Party member.
The soldiers serving near the southern city of Plovdiv have been ordered to prepare the party scheduled for the upcoming weekend near the town of Asenovgrad in the same region, Todor Krastev, a BSP Municipal Council Member, has alarmed.
He has described the order as "an impudent abuse of power on behalf of the ruling party". According to Krastev, the event will be a "feast in time of plague", the Dnevnik daily says.
The leftist compared the scheduled event to the recent scandal in which it turned out that students from the town of Peshtera have taken part in a contest to solve historical, logic and sports problems with teams receiving one word as prize for each successful solution. The final phrase ended reading "We Are GERB, We Are Stronger with You."
Regarding the event described by Krastev as an "outside barbecue party", the Bulgarian Defense Ministry has clarified that it will be a meeting between GERB MPs and Plovdiv citizens, which will include charity. GERB's Plovdiv organization have confirmed that 1400 tents have been ordered.
