Gaza Faces Critical Hunger as UN Suspends Aid Due to Military Operations
The United Nations has halted food distribution in Rafah due to a severe shortage of supplies and insecurity in the area
The three Bulgarian air crew, who were abducted in Sudan in January, have been released Monday.
The information was confirmed by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) from Darfur.
The men will be flown to Khartoum before travelling home to Bulgaria.
"WFP is grateful to the Government of Sudan for its tireless efforts in securing the release of the three men who were seized while they were working to help the most vulnerable people in Darfur," WFP Regional Director, Amer Daoudi, is quoted saying in Khartoum, adding the three appeared to be in good health.
The three men were abducted by armed men on January 13, at a landing strip in Um Shalaya, 60 kilometers southeast of the West Darfur capital of El Geneina. They were working for WFP's United Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) as employees of the Heli Air company
"Throughout their detention, WFP was assured that they were safe and well. WFP worked closely with the Government of Sudan at all levels for the safe release of the three men. WFP paid no ransom to secure their release," the announcement further reads.
WFP explain this was the second abduction involving WFP's air service crew within three months. The first incident involved the abduction of three Latvian air crew men by gunmen on 4 November 2010 in the South Darfur capital of Nyala. They were released after more than a month in captivity.
