Rumen Petkov, Bulgaria's former socialist Minister of Interior, stated he fired the present Customs Agency head Vanyo Tanov from the ministry upon discovering his ties to drug trafficking circles.

"We caught Tanov in contact with a woman close to Serbian drug trafficker Budimir Kujovic," explained Petkov in an interview for Nova TV Saturday evening.

Vanyo Tanov was appointed director of the Directorate General for Fight with Organized Crime at the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior at the inception of Petkov's term in office in 2005.

In 2007 Tanov submitted his resignation, which the then-minister promptly approved.

Then Tanov made public a meeting between Rumen Petkov and controversial Dupnitsa murky businessmen, the Galevi Brothers, which resulted in Petkov's resignation.

In the wake of those events, Tanov quickly joined the ranks of now-ruling center-right GERB party.

In the Nova TV interview Saturday, Rumen Petkov also suggested that the recent leaks of alleged records of secretly surveilled conversations including Vanyo Tanov and other senior state officials that caused a huge outrage in Bulgarian politics might have been orchestrated by Tanov himself.

In the conversations Tanov appears pressured by various high-ranking statesmen, including front-bench MPs, Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov and PM Boyko Borisov himself, to do various things in breach of his duties.

In the past, Serbian drug trafficker Budimir Kujovic has been the cause of a numer of upheavals in the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior.
