Bulgarian parliament has rejected the veto of the Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov on the new amendments to the Election Code.

Out of 187 Bulgarian MPs in the plenary hall, 129 voted in favor of rejecting the veto, 50 voted against and 8 abstained.

On January 3, Parvanov imposed a veto on the new amendments to the Election Code, saying that they are in favor of the ruling centrist GERB party and they aim at securing the party's win at the upcoming elections.

"I expected the President to be present at the plenary hall during the discussions for the Election Code," said Iskra Fidosova, Chair of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, and pointed that the elections determine the structure of the state.

She also noted that she found several mistakes in the reasons for vetoing the amendments, which perplexed her.

"I do not even dare to think that the President might have not read the Code," Fidosova said.

She defined as a mistake the interpretation in Parvanov's motives that the mayors of small towns were appointed by the municipal councils.

Fidosova also denied the motives regarding the decrease in the number of council members by pointing out that this only happens in some but not all local authorities.

According to Maya Manolova from the Bulgarian Socialist Party, the present Election Code is restricting the voting rights of people.

"This Election Code is leading the country to anti-democratic elections. It restricts the voting rights of people because according to the ruling party, it is a buoy. The government is drowning and they need to take urgent measures for the upcoming elections. They need a balloon to save them from the swamp," she said.

However, Pavel Shopov from the nationalist party Ataka has stated that the veto is a political act by the President and there are no reasonable and legal argument in its support.

"Parvanov is entering politics as a subject and is serving the ethnic Turkish party DPS because of the favors that the party did for him throughout the years," Shopov said.

The rightist Blue Coalition abstained from voting with the motive that the majority has ignored many of their arguments on the Election Code.
