In a harrowing turn of events, a group of Greek tourists sparked a fatal avalanche in Borovets, Bulgaria, while venturing off-track for a photo opportunity
Two top Bulgarian winter resorts – Pamporovo and Borovets, are officially launching this weekend the winter season.
Pamporovo opens the season with sleeker, larger and renewed ski tracks while the track between Snezhanka and Studenets will have lighting overnight, until now only available at Borovets and Vitosha.
Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Economy, Energy, and Tourism, Ivo Marinov, who attended the ceremony at Pamporovo, said the country is expecting a better tourist season 2010-2011 with 3% increase of local tourists and 20% overall increase compared to last winter.
Travel agents report increase in the number of reservations from Russia, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Romania while the Plovdiv airport has two times more flights compared to last year, according to its director. He further informed that the launch of regular flights to Spain was forthcoming.
Season lift passes at the resort are reduced to BGN 950 compared to BGN 1 480 in 2009-2010. Police patrols, fluent in foreign languages, will monitor the tracks. The discovery of mineral waters nearby to be used for SPA tourism is another news of the season at Pamporovo.
At Borovets, the opening ceremony was accompanied by snowboard and ski demonstrations, a 50% discount of lift passes for the weekend, and free admission at the children snow park "Borokids."
New investments at the resort focus on artificial snow making with two new snow guns purchased for this reason. They will be used for the "Yastrebets" and the "Sitnyakovo" ski areas while the "Markudzhik" one has a new system for snow maintenance in order to prevent the blow away of snow caused by strong winds.
Borovets further boasts a new parking lot with 150 parking spaces.
