Bulgaria's PM Boyko Borisov is an "amazing PR" and a populist, who knows how to get the masses of people exited, according to former German Deputy Ambassador to Sofia, Klaus Schrameyer.

"Bulgaria's parliament has turned into a voting machine, managed by the ruling party. No, this is not a free and sovereign parliament anymore. If for example, Borisov appears worries to the parliament and explain to the MPs that what he said the day before was not valid anymore and asks them to vote on the contrary, they will do so immediately," Schrameyer said.

In his interview for Deutsche Welle on Wednesday, he said that as a Secretary General to the Interior Ministry, Borisov had "few good performances" in the fight against crime.

In Schrameyer's words, the secretary general appeared on TV but that did not change anything and did not help the solving of the 200 gangland murders that were on the agenda at the time.

"A little bit of drugs, a little bit of detained items at the customs, but we never saw the disclosure of one of the serious crimes committed in Bulgaria. In this sense, Borisov is a populist, a genius manipulator, as was the former Tsar, Simeon Saxe-Coburg. The tendency of the Bulgarians to seek for a messiah stands behind all this. And this is very dangerous," Schrameyer said.

In his opinion, Bulgaria's problem after the fall of the communist regime in 1989 was the lack of true statesmen and in this regard, the country is no exception on the Balkans.

However, in his words, unfortunately, at that time Bulgaria lacked such a statesman who had the courage to put an end to the communist dominance.

"The round table was the first mistake because that was not a conversation between two equal men, as the case in Poland was. At the round table in Bulgaria, one against each other were the former nomenklatura with all its power and the poor Bulgarian opposition, which at this moment lacked copy machines and paper for printing materials of the nascent party Union of Democratic Forces (UDF)," Schrameyer said.

In his words, the round table was a farce. He added that another big victory of the communists was the adopting of the constitution, in which they have managed to consolidate legally their ownership.

"All these were things that should not have happened," Schrameyer said.
