Bulgaria's sporting director Nasko Sirakov has confirmed his resignation, following the football team Euro 2012 qualifying campaign that he has branded a "tragedy".

"I am sorry I was apparently misunderstood last night when I just not hinted, but announced that I will quit too. The football team lost two consecutive games and that means I have not done my job well and should leave," Sirakov said on Wednesday.

"I came to help the lads and the team but it seems that I didn't cope with my task.

The former national team player however will continue to be a member of the executive council of the football union.

Bulgaria, beaten 4-0 by England at Wembley on Friday, lost 1-0 at home to Montenegro on Tuesday evening. The team visit Wales on October 8 in their next qualifier and the BFU has already began their search for a new coach after the resignation of Stanimir Stoilov.

Meanwhile it emerged that Aston Villa midfielder and Bulgaria team captain Stilyan Petrov is considering his retirement from international football with immediate effect before the end of the Euro 2012 qualifications.

The news of his upcoming retirement comes just three months after the previous captain of the team and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov retired from international football after winning 74 caps for his country.

His decision was a blow for Stanimir Stoilov, who had an uphill task in trying to qualify for the European Championship finals in 2012, an apparently impossible task.
