State Agency for National Security Conducts Major Operation In Sofia
A significant operation led by the State Agency for National Security (DANS) and the Anti-Corruption Commission is currently underway across Sofia and the country
A team of top world surgeons from Bulgaria, the United States, and Spain have performed life saving surgeries of seven Bulgarian children with spine deformations.
For the fourth consecutive year, leading world surgeons perfomed unique medical exams and operations in Bulgaria with the financial support of Osteotech Inc. and the Euro-Atlantic Transplant Alliance (EATA).
The exams and operations were carried out between April 26 and April 30 in the Tokuda Hospital in Sofia under the Boachie Program named after Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei of the Special Surgery Hospital in New York City, who is one of the top world specialists on spine reconstruction.
The program focuses on providing free access to most advanced treatment for Bulgarian children with spine deformations.
“The American company Osteotech Inc with its focus on social responsibility has been providing the full funding for the Boachie Program for Bulgaria in the last three years. These operations are life saving for many Bulgarian kids with severe spine deformations because the growth of a deformed spine can cause life-threatening damage to crucial internal organs,” said Dr. Rumen Hichev, President and CEO of Tissue Bank “Osteocenter Bulgaria.”
“Surgeries with such complexity as the ones that have been performed at the Tokuda Hospital cost about USD 300 000 in the USA. This is why I am extremely happy that with our help world famous specialists work in Bulgaria for free, together with our collegue from Tokuda, Dr. Yablanski, thus creating medical expertise that can provide adequate medical care for Bulgarian kids with spine problems,” explained Dr. Hichev.
The foreign surgeons which operated Bulgarian children at Tokuda included Prof. Steven Mardjetko from the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, Prof. Peter Sturm from the Shriners Children Hospital in Chicago, Prof. Munish Gupta from at the Spine Surgery Center of the University of California Davis Medical School, and Prof. Paco Sanchez from the La Paz University Clinic in Madrid, Spain.
The Tokuda hospital has been selected for the spine deformations surgeries because it provides the best conditions in Bulgaria for such operations.
The biological tranplants for the children who underwent the surgeries have been provided by the Tissie Bank “Osteocenter Bulgaria” and Tissue Bank “Pirogov”, and have been prepared in the US under the Grafton technology of Osteotech.
