“Let God protect Bulgaria,” is the message that Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, who is on a two-day official visit to Israel, left at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.
Asked whether he has wished something for himself he said:
“Whatever comes to Bulgaria, comes to me as well. When everything is fine with the country, I will feel good as well.”
Earlier in the day Borisov conferred with Teophilos III, the Greek-Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, after which he and the delegation, led by him, bowed at the Tomb of Jesus.
The Wailing Wall is an important Jewish religious site located in the Old City of Jerusalem, a symbol of unimaginable suffering and inexplicable survival.
Just over half the wall, including its 17 courses located below street level, dates from the end of the Second Temple period, being constructed around 19 BCE by Herod the Great. The remaining layers were added from the 7th century onwards.
This is the first visit of a Bulgarian prime minister in Israel for the last eighteen years. Prime Minister Filip Dimitrov was the last to pay a visit to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv in 1992.
