Inside Bulgaria's Easter Celebrations: Traditions Passed Through Generations
Today marks the joyous celebration of Easter, one of the most significant holidays in the Orthodox Christian calendar.
The National Movement for Stability and Progress party (NDSV) will approach the Bulgarian and European Ombudsmen in Strasbourg concerning systematic violations of human rights in the country.
The party, until recently led by Simeon Saxe-Coburg, announced on Monday that it would lodge appeals on four alleged violations of human rights to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
NDSV will send a letter to the Commissioner for Human Rights ans to the President of the European Liberals and Democrats, stated the party’s chairperson, Hristina Hristova.
The first appeal is directly related to the recent decision by the Bulgarian parliament to approve a moratorium on properties transferred to heirs of the Bulgarian tsars Boris III and Ferdinand I.
In a public response issued last Friday, Saxe-Coburg had condemned the move, saying that the action had demonstrated “a disregard for the rule of law and was a flagrant violation of the Constitution of Bulgaria."
"One of the most important achievements of democracy is the inviolability of private property and equal rights and obligations of all Bulgarian citizens. Their violation takes us back to one of the darkest periods in our history,” he had announced.
In order to approach the ECHR as a private citizen, and to protect his individual interests, Saxe-Coburg has freed himself of all political engagement and activity.
Two other allegations of violations include: the proposed changes to the Electronic Communications Act and direct monitoring of phone communications and electronic correspondence, and the independent state authority for control of special intelligence methods that was prescribed to be established by the Council of Europe.
The final complaint concerns the proposed referendum on the question of Turkish-language news broadcasts on Bulgarian National Television (BNT), a move initially supported by PM Borisov, but that requires parliamentary discussion and approval before it can take place.
