Macedonia Media: Bulgarian PM Is Loser!
Media outlets in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia have reacted strongly to Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov's comment on their country's judicial system.
The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative Georgi Panayotov has met with the temporary head of the Macedonian Embassy in Sofia regarding the Spaska Mitrova case.
The Macedonian representative Divna Trichkovska called for the meeting at which information was shared on the Mitrova case. She rejected the interference of Bulgarian authorities and stated that as Macedonia is a democratic country with an independent judiciary, the case would not be reviewed and the verdict would not be changed.
The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry stated in an official press release that it did not want the case to effect relations between the countries and stated that Bulgaria still supports the liberalization of the EU visa regime for Macedonian citizens and the further integration of Macedonia into the EU and NATO.
However the Ministry stated that they expected a communication channel to be opened for them with which they could contact Mitrova after the Bulgarian consul was only allowed to visit her twice in August. They stated that they were also worried about the human rights at issue in the case.
The statement concluded that Macedonian citizens who are attached to their Bulgarian origin should not be regarded as opponents of the Republic of Macedonia, but as a live connection with Bulgaria and the EU.
Mitrova was recently sentenced to 3 months in jail even though she recently had a baby, because she did not allow her former husband to stay at her parents' home in order to visit their older child after their divorce.
The reasons why Mitrova requested a divorce included her former husband constantly abusing her physically, and insulting her because of her national identity.
