A new gas crisis in Europe has been avoided as the Ukraine has paid for the natural gas it received from Russia in May 2009.
The news has been reported by the Bulgarian National Radio which cites a statement of Naftogaz representatives.
A new crisis in the Russian natural gas supplies for Europe was looming as the Ukrainian gas company did not have sufficient funds to pay for the gas it received in May from the Russian energy giant Gazprom.
On Friday, Gazprom even extended the deadline for the payments by two days setting it on June 9.
As the Ukraine has paid its dues, however, and a new crisis as the one that left much of Europe without gas in January 2009 has been avoided, Bogdan Sokolovski, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko's special adviser on energy security, has stated that Kiev expected an apology from Moscow because the Russian leadership has expressed doubts whether Naftogaz would be able to pay its bill.
