On May 18, expect sunny weather with cumulus clouds forming after noon, leading to isolated rain showers in mountainous regions
Bulgaria will be in the grip of a Mediterranean front bringing inclement weather over the next three days with heavy downpours forecast in the southwestern parts of Bulgaria, particularly on Friday.
In areas with altitudes of over 400-500 meters the precipitation will take the form of snow. The forecast is issued by Bulgaria's National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Precipitations will continue overnight into Saturday, especially in the Western parts of the country, where snow accumulation is expected. The forecast is for strong winds in the Eastern regions, mainly on the Black Sea coast.
The precipitations will slowly subside Sunday with snow in Western Bulgaria and rain in the Black Sea region.
Snow storms and drifts are expected in the country's mountainous areas.
Traffic at the "Shipka" mountain pass is impeded Thursday due to significant snowfall in the Balkan Mountain range. Vehicles attempting to cross the mountain are required to have chains.
