A rally in support of a Bulgarian immigrant in Greece, who became a victim of an acid attack just before Christmas, took place in Sofia on March 8, the International Women's Day.
Kostadinka Kuneva, who is the Chair of the Federation of Cleaners and Maid-servants in Attica District, became a victim of an acid attack in Athens last Christmas. She suffered heavy injuries on her face and body and lost one of her eyes. The perpetrators of the attack are still unknown. It is assumed that the attack is linked to her active work as a trade union leader.
The rally in Sofia will start at the entrance of Sofia University and end in front of the Greek Embassy. It comes just two weeks after more than 1 000 people gathered in downtown Athens in support of the Bulgarian at the initiative of the Federation of Cleaners and Maid-servants in Attica District. The protestors demanded that the perpetrators be arrested and brought to justice. They also called on all immigrants in Greece to unite and demand the better observation of labor legislation.
Greek trade unions say they are following closely the case and have urged an extensive and detailed investigation into it. They have committed to settle all paper work regarding Kuneva's social securities and have pledged to secure financial support for her family.
