The Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov suggested Wednesday that all political parties should sign a pre-election agreement including a plan to tackle the negative effects of the global financial crisis on the Bulgarian economy.

Borisov presented this idea during a forum on the gray economy in Bulgaria. In his words, if such an inter-party pact was signed, it would not matter who would win the 2009 Parliamentary Elections because the new government would have to stick to the stipulated measures.

The Sofia Mayor, who is the informal leader of the GERB party, recommended that the government should not get in fights with the European Commission because it might have to resort to asking the EU for financial support.

In Borisov's words, any quarrels with the Commission might urge the Brussels experts to dig deeper into the government's activities, which would hurt the governing parties.

The Mayor also declared that Bulgaria's judicial system could work efficiently if it was fed sufficient evidence. He pointed to Sofia Municipality's inspection of the municipal firm "Sofiiski Imoti" (Sofia Real Estate), and to the ensuing cases as an example.
