The Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov, who is also the informal leader of the GERB party, blamed Saturday the governing coalition for the rampant corruption in the country which led to the freezing of EU funds right at the onset of the global financial crisis.

"The gentlemen from the Bulgarian Socialist Party behave as if they were in the Young Communist League - cheerful and smiling, they are telling us there was no crisis. Right before the start of the crisis they allowed the wide-ranging corruption, which led to the withdrawal of EU money. Former heads of state funds and agencies are leaving, because they don't want to steal any more, and come to us (the GERB party) asking for forgiveness", Borisov stated.

In his words, Bulgaria might be hit seriously in the event of a global recession leading to rising unemployment, and the closure of whole factories and firms.

The Sofia Mayor, who is also a former Chief Secretary of the Interior Ministry, also commented that the truth about the death of the top ranking activist of the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) Ahmed Emin would never be revealed.

Emin, the head of the political cabinet of the DPS leader Ahmed Dogan, was discovered dead on Friday, October 17, allegedly after committing suicide.

According to Borisov, there had been many violations in the investigation of Emin's death, and his funeral was organized rather hastily, which led to serious suspicions.

The GERB leader pointed out the Bulgarian Socialist Party was planning to rule the country in cooperation with the DPS once again, and that is why it had no interest to investigate and urge for the reformation of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms.

Once again, Borisov stated his firm intention that his party GERB was never going cooperation with the BSP and the DPS.

The Sofia Mayor was in the city of Plovdiv on Saturday, where the GERB party presented its policy program in the healthcare sector. It envisages the complete reform of the healthcare system, reducing the VAT on medicines, the privatization of some medical services, and increasing the state funding for the sector by 0,5% of the GDP each year of the new mandate until it reaches 6,5% of the GDP.
