The Georgian infantry has launched a new offensive Saturday night against Tskhinvali, the capital of the breakaway province of South Ossetia, ITAR-TASS reported.

Several Georgian tanks also managed to break through the defense of the city but the South Ossetian forces reported destroyed three of them.

The city is still held by the South Ossetian fighters, who are supported by the North Ossetian and Russian Peacekeeping Battalions stationed in Tskhinvali under the Dragomys Treaty, which ended a two-year civil war in the separatist province in 1990-92.

The Russian troops in South Ossetia received reinforcements earlier on Saturday from troops from the 58th Russian Army, who are engaged in keeping the villages around the capital city controlling the Transcaucasus Highway.

The Russian military campaign in Georgia has been accompanied by aerial bombardments including on cities outside South Ossetia such Gori, where a number of civilians are reported killed. Russia is also allegedly supporting the troops of the other breakaway Georgian province Abkhazia.

Georgia is launching its offensive on Tskhinvali after Saturday afternoon the Russian Army declared it had "liberated" the city from the Georgians.
