Bulgaria is going to finance 10 students from the Gorani community in Southwest Kosovo to study in Bulgarian universities each year.

This was announced by Mursel Halili, the leader of the Civic Initiative of the Gorani in Kosovo after the Bulgarian European Affairs Minister Gergana Grancharova visited Friday the Gora Region.

Halili denied any allegations that Grancharova had been trying to talk the Gorani into declaring themselves Bulgarians.

In his words, the Bulgarian Minister expressed her respect for the Gorani identity and promised to prompt Bulgarian firms to check the investment opportunities in the Gora Region in Southwest Kosovo.

"The Gorani Community is not Bulgarian. We are citizens of Serbia and have no reasons to change our identity", Halili said Friday cited by the Bulgarian private Darik Radio.

In his words, the only thing connecting the Gorani to Bulgaria was the possibility of getting Bulgarian passports, which would open the door to the West for them.

As part of her visit to Kosovo, the Bulgarian Minister on European Affairs Gergana Grancharova met with the prime minister of the newly independent republic Hashim Taci, the President Fatmir Seidiu, and the EU special envoy to Kosovo Peter Faith. She took part in a conference of the Pan-European Union, one of the oldest European unification movements, which took place in the city of Prizren.

Grancharova's meeting with the representatives of the Gorani community is part of the efforts of the Bulgarian government to establish connections with it after Kosovo was declared independent in February.
