Bulgaria declared Wednesday a day of mourning in memory of the nine victims of the recent deadly fire on a train in northern Bulgaria.

The decision came amid a raging controversy as to why the government skipped to declare days of mourning immediately after the tragedy and did not cancel the ceremonies, marking the country's national holiday March 3.

Nine people were charred to death and nine more were injured after two cars of the night train going from Sofia to the northeastern town of Kardam burst into flames minutes after midnight on February 29.

Valeria Zheleva, Daniel Vichev, prof. Rasho Rashev, Maya Masheva, Stoyan Kovachev, Kalcho Stefanov, Galina Ivanova, Elena Halacheva, and Antoaneta Todorova all lost their lives in the hellish blaze.
