Bulgaria: Roma Squatters Make Home in English Family's House in Bulgaria The housing problem among Bulgarian Roma often cause them to turn into squatters. This time, however, it is an unsuspecting English family with a house in the village of Gostilitza that bears the brunt.

A Roma family lives illegally in the house of an English family in the village of Gostilitza, Gabrovo District. The English owners are not in Bulgaria, and have no idea what is going on with their home.

The mayor of the mountain village has been trying to solve the problem for months without any success, the Bulgarian National Television reported.

As the Roma settled in the house four months ago, the local people called the police but the officers replied they needed a petition from the legal owners of the house to take action.

According to the locals, seven Roma including one pregnant woman live happy and unpunished in the English family's home despite the fact that the house has no electricity and running water.

The Roma are unemployed, do not pay any bills, and get food on credit from the local grocery store. "They lie a lot, they have been shopping here on credit for a month and half and promise to pay me back", the owner of the shop said.

The squatters, however, do not appear to see any problem with what they are doing. In their words, the house is empty and the winter is bad time to change their residence.

After they received no help from the police, the locals hope that the unwanted settlers will move out when the spring comes. They fear they would be discredited if the Roma were still there when the English owners arrive.
