In Richness and Poverty

Bulgaria: In Richness and Poverty Photo by Nadya Kotseva (Sofia Photo Agency)

There has recently emerged yet another proof of Bulgaria being the country of the absurdity. And still there is no other place where the poverty and wealth could cohabitate so peacefully.

People's representatives, who are so conscientiously fulfilling their duties related to lawmaking, made themselves nice Christmas presents - a 5% rise of their salaries while at the same time data of the EU statistics office shows Bulgarians see the end of the first year of membership as the poorest citizens in the whole bloc. Their purchasing power is over seven times less than the top-ranked Luxembourg nationals.

If that is not an absurd what is it then?

Teachers, doctors and other employees staged numerous protest rallies in a desperate attempt of wringing some miserable increase of their miserable wages. What did the rulers do then? They condemned one of the protest actions as "sedyanka" (a Bulgarian word that describes a sitting of village people, talking whatever between them), obviously considering they put enough efforts in its adjourning. A little bit later the MPs went back to the parliamentary hall just to shower themselves with bonuses to their monthly pay slip next year in acknowledgment of their work in parliamentary committees. Even the fact that their wages are currently three times higher than the average salary in the public sector did not stop them. Bearing in mind all MPs are members of wide range of the twenty-four bodies within the parliament, I believe you can make conclusions about the final figure of their extra payments.

Otherwise, all politicians pretend to be honest and preach morality among their fellow-citizens. I would qualify that not as an absurd behaviour but rather as impudence. The officials seem not to live in Bulgaria and try to escape the reality in the country they reign in. It is curious how much longer it would last...
