Bulgaria's Football Union (BFU) chief Borislav Mihaylov confirmed on Saturday that he has approached Terry Venables to take over as national football team manager.

"I don't want to reveal the names of the foreign coaches we've talked to because we're still negotiating with them," Mihaylov told an English tabloid.

"But I can tell you we've held talks with Macedonia coach Srecko Katanec and we're waiting for Terry Venables's answer as well," he added.

Katanec, who has recently quit from his post with the Macedonia team, has denied being approached by BFU, while Venables has been linked with the Ireland job, which he reportedly "fancies".

His most recent job was assistant to England manager Steve McClaren, who was sacked by the English FA last month after the team finished third in its group E with 23 points and failed to qualify for EURO 2008.

Bulgaria came third in its own group G, on 25 points, missing out on a second major tournament in a row and is mulling the appointment of a foreign manager for the first time since before World War II.

However, its failure to qualify also means BFU hardly has the money to pay a top manager, who is likely to demand more than EUR 1 M in yearly wages.
