A non-commissioned officer from the Bulgarian contingent in Afghanistan has been sent home after an incident involving firearms, which resulted in the wounding of a French serviceman.

Hristian Petrov has failed to observe the handling regulations regarding personal firearms and accidentally fired his Makarov pistol, the Bulgarian Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The French serviceman was wounded in the hip, but his life is not in danger.

Petrov will also be put on probation for a year, the ministry said.

Bulgaria has 400 servicemen in Afghanistan, their bulk ensuring security at the Kandahar airport, as well as several medical crews.
