The death sentences of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor in Libya will be commuted in exchange for a compensation package of USD 400 M for the children's families, the French Le Figaro claims.

Bulgaria, Slovakia, Croatia and the Czech Republic will pay the relatives USD 1 M in blood money for each infected child, the report cites Seif al-Islam, son of Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, as saying.

He adds that Libya has not reached an agreement yet with the European Union on the issue.

Often referred to as "blood money", compensation for death or suffering is an Islamic legal provision widespread in parts of the Middle East and North Africa.
