Politics | July 6, 2007, Friday // 00:00

The voting at Bulgaria's local elections in autumn will not be obligatory, the country's parliament decided on Thursday.

The MPs argued more than four hours on the issue, after the ex-king's party National Movement for Stability and Progress proposed on Tuesday an obligatory voting for all Bulgarians.

During the heated debates some other proposals emerges, such as even the 16-year-old Bulgarians must be given the right to vote.

Eventually the MEPs decided that the Bulgarians will vote as stated in the law - only Bulgarian nationals who have lived in the county or in a EU member state in the three months prior to the election will be allowed to cast their ballot.
