Bulgaria: Never Enough Photo by Nadya Kotseva (Sofia Photo Agency)

After a long process of thinking and investigating, Bulgarian prosecutor's Office has finally lodged a bill of indictment against the former head of Sofia heating utility, charging him with currency frauds. So far so good! It looks like the authorities made an attempt to control the chaos that is reigning in the country. But, as it usually happens in this geographical altitude, they finished less than half of the work that should be done.

The magistrates put the accused behind bars for about a year but obviously this period turned out to be extremely short for completing the investigation process concerning the charges with money laundering and embezzlement.

The office of the defendant was found as equipped as a seven-star hotel. There was not an explanation about the source of the money invested in the luxurious nook although the sum has apparently increased hundreds times the boss' monthly payment. The authorities decided it was not strong enough evidence for instituting really speedy investigation on the case.

Then it emerged there were fat accounts in foreign banks owned by the defendant and his mother, who is officially registered as a pensioner. The rulers obviously thought the old woman was one of those filthy rich pensioners in Bulgaria and did not paid attention to this absurd. And did nothing once again!

When the situation seemed it was to be wrapped up, the prosecutors decided to save some troubles to the heating utility head bring only one accusation against him. They claim it will be temporarily so.

Meanwhile, it became clear the investigation on the great corruption scandal that shook the country, making one energy minister and another chief investigator resign will trail two months more. Let's hope the calculations are not wrong this time and the interval mentioned will be long enough.

All these facts make me ask once again - how long the Bulgarians should wait to see the justice system is not dead just as the conscience of its servants?
