Sofia Caves in to Public Transport Drivers, Strike Not Cancelled

Sofia's municipality and the union of public transport workers agreed on a BGN 200 rise in salaries in a bid to prevent a strike on May 15.
Representatives of the strike committees conferred with the heads of Sofia transport companies and the deputy mayor in charge of transport Velizar Stoilov for more than two hours on Sunday.
They agreed that the new paychecks - featuring not BGN 400 but BGN 600 - come into force as of June 1. The companies will also have to find clever ways to hold down overtime working hours.
The drivers, however, warned they may not back down from their decision to go on a strike, despite the fact that the government has caved in to their protests.
They are demanding a rise of BGN 250 in their monthly paycheck, improved working conditions and tax reliefs.
If the workers are not satisfied Sofia is in for a stressful Tuesday as the strike will halt all public transport.
