Bulgarian Princess Kalina's 1st Son Gets Ancient Martenitsa as Gift

Society | March 25, 2007, Sunday // 00:00

The newborn son of Bulgaria's Princess Kalina got Sunday a most unusual present for his birth from a man of the revolutionary town of Sopot.

The little Simeon III Hassan, who was born on March 14, received a typical Bulgarian martenitsa of 150 years of age from Petar Berliev. Bulgarians give martenitsas to each other on March 1 as a symbolic charm that keeps people healthy throughout the year.

The 150-years-old relic is the predecessor of the modern martenitsas and there is just one other preserved in the Dabene village.

According to Berliev, the ancient martenistsa is a symbol of an old Thracian tradition.
