The Sofia University's Dean Boyan Biolchev has been bestowed the Bulgarian Novel of the Year Award for his Varoe's Amazon.

Biolchev grabbed the award of BGN 10,000 for his novel and its English translation in contest with five other short-listed novelists.

The laureate announced he would donate the money from the prize for the establishment of a students' award contest for poems and short stories.

The plot of Varoe's Amazon was initially intended for a movie script but was rejected by Bulgaria's Cinematographic Artistic Council because it was too ironic for the national taste, the happy prize-winner said.

The story of the novel takes place in the 8th century AC and combines the three elements that comprised Bulgarian nationality - proto-Bulgarians, Slavs, and Thracians. It is a comic dream into the past, a joke with accumulated mythology, the author said.

The contest was initiated by Edward Vick, founder of the EVS Company, one of Europe's leading translation companies, which also has an office in Bulgaria. He has established the Vick Foundation in 2004, which inaugurated the prize "Bulgarian Novel of the Year.
