Illness Prompted Bulgarian Top Piracy Fighter Suicide - Report

The serious illness colonel Boyko Nikolov has been battling with for the last several months is believed to be the reason that prompted him to pull the trigger and put an end to his life, Darik News reported.

Nikolov, director of the intellectual property and computer crimes department within the Chief Directorate for Organized Crime Fight, committed suicide early on Tuesday. The tragedy unfolded at about 5 am.

Nikolov shot himself dead in his flat and in the presence of his wife. Unofficial information says Nikolov shot himself with his personal weapon.

No further details were immediately available.

The head of the anti-piracy department has been seriously ill and on a sick-leave for about half a year. He was about to retire.

Boyko Nikolov has serviced the Interior Ministry for 24 years.
