Romanian Pirates Pilfer Bulgarian Ferryboat

Romanian pirates have raided a Bulgarian ferryboat Saturday while the crew and passengers were all gathered for a sudden passport check at the Romanian port of Galati.

The Petar Beron ship was pilfered by culprits, who approached with boats and used hooks and ropes to board her, the second mate Rosen Raykov announced. The platform where all the vehicles were parked was left with no one to guard it as everyone reported to the customs authorities, and the pirates quickly rummaged through it.

Car windows were broken and the culprits took USD 500, some clothes, cables, a water pump and a month-old dog of the elite breed Caucasian Shepherd that costs at least USD 750, one of the drivers said.

The Romanian pirates probably tap the radio channel 7 that ship crews use to report to the authorities ashore. Once they have heard what cars and cargo are on board the pirates attack, Raykov assumed.

Drivers, who often use this ferryboat route, say that such attacks often take place.
