Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, 37, announced his retirement from international football after his team beat Portugal 3-1 in Stuttgart, a victory that ensured them the third place.

"That was my last international match. It was a beautiful time but you have to know when it's all over," he told ZDF German TV after the World Cup 2006 mini final.

In his last match Kahn showed class is permanent, making crucial saves from Pauleta and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"It was one of the most emotional, if not the most emotional moment that I can remember. You can hardly wish for a more beautiful final game," he said.

Kahn played his first match for Germany against Switzerland in Berne on June 23, 1995.

The Bayern Munich captain was named the world's best goalkeeper three times and Europe's best keeper four times.

He won the Golden Ball awarded given to the most valuable player at the 2002 World Cup.
